Porsche has announced the launch of the Porsche Macan EV, the first all-electric SUV from the world’s largest sports car brand. The SUV, which follows in the footsteps of the larger Cayenne, is smaller, lighter, more compact, and more agile. The new images, created exclusively for CAR magazine by computer artist Lars Saltzer, reveal what the electric Porsche Macan will look like when the covers slide off in 2024. The original 2022 launch date has been pushed back due to Covid complications, supply issues, and the complexity of launching a group-wide new EV architecture. The new Macan is a major relaunch, fast-forwarding two generations with the current tech stack.

Porsche’s EV range, the Macan EV, is set to compete with the Taycan and Panamera. The Macan EV is built on an updated version of Porsche and Audi’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE), running an 800-volt architecture similar to the Taycan. The battery, supplied as standard, consists of 12 modules with prismatic cells and is 8:1:1 in nickel, cobalt, and manganese. Porsche has used silicon carbide (SiC) as the semiconductor in the rear axle for higher switching frequencies. The EV can charge at up to 270kW, allowing the battery to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in less than 22 minutes. The Integrated Power Box (IPB) combines three components for a lighter, more compact unit. The e-Macan is powered by the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture co-developed by Audi and Porsche, which is bespoke EV hardware for higher-riding electric cars in the upper segments.
The electric Macan is set to be launched with a 100kWh battery, capable of over 320 miles of range. All models use twin motors, with a cheaper single-motor, two-wheel drive version available later. Four-wheel steering is available on higher-spec models, while Turbo models use a brawnier rear motor and electronic differential for precise handling and traction. The battery is lightweight but tough, with a glass-fibre composite under-body guard and a cooling plate integrated into the housing. The battery is repairable and has been water tested for immersion. It can be charged from a 10 to 80% state of charge in less than 22 minutes, with up to 240 kW of recuperation possible on the move. The Macan has two charging ports on both sides, with AC charging available on the left side port. New innovations include a ‘bank charging’ setup, which divides the battery pack into two 400 volt units connected in parallel, allowing faster charging with 400 volts each.
2024 Porsche Macan EV Car ride & handling
The Macan EV, a four-wheel-drive, turbo-charged sportscar, is demonstrated on a track in Leipzig, Germany, with its performance reminiscent of an early Nissan GT-R prototype. The Macan weighs between 2.2 and 2.3 tonnes and has 1,000Nm of torque, allowing it to match supercar sprint times. The test driver uses the 612hp, rear-wheel steering, and torque vectoring to execute a long righthander, allowing the rear to come around and provoking a slide on purpose.
The low-slung battery and quick e-motors make it easier to slide, and the Macan is even driven over rough ground, with every lump and bump on the surface felt. Porsche is in a tricky position as it must invest in both technologies, as the brand’s chairman, Oliver Blume, said that their platform strategies will not converge for a few years. He is closely monitoring the development of different regions around the world.
Porsche is set to launch a fun, fast, and playful car in India in mid-2024, priced around Rs 1.4 crore for the Turbo variant. The company is well-prepared for the shift to electric mobility and predicts that half of its sales will come from pure-electric vehicles by 2025. This means high-revving four- and six-cylinder engines will soon be replaced by electric vehicles, prompting petrol enthusiasts to place orders now.
